Big News!

The puppy now officially has a name.

BEAUREGARD SCHULDIG

This took a while. Schuldig means guilty in German. See that look of his? It's kind of guilty.

I got to shoot a beautiful wedding this Sunday.

I have two weddings this weekend

Originally uploaded by tanalee.
A first for me. When I went out today I didn't want to carry anything heavy so I used a 300D Digital Rebel with the very light kit lens (18-55mm). I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get anything good but I was very happy with this photo.

By the way

Leopard Cat

Originally uploaded by tanalee.
I took little puppy dog to get vaccinated yesterday. Very stressful environment. I was still trying to work the fisheye lens and I'm not real good around needles. Little puppy got his shot, peed on me and got lethargic but he seems to be better now.

While I was waiting for puppy's shot-- (Puppy's name is Beau but I'm kind of not feeling it) the lady on the right came in.

She referred to this cat repeatedly as "her son. Mommy'll do anything for her son". A lot of that. Then the:

"His name is Anakin . . . Skywalker . . . like in . . . Star Wars."

A lot of that. She said the cat was literally descended from a leopard. Which I believe, I guess. She was saying he bites like it's a good thing. As if she literally has a leopard that might maul her. That makes it real.

There was more weirdness at the clinic but that is one seriously cool cat.

I got a fisheye lens

Originally uploaded by tanalee.
a couple of months ago. It's an old Pentax, probably from the seventies. I really like the fisheye effect but it was my understanding that my digital cameras don't perform all that well in the very wide (17mm) range.

Now that I have L lenses the optics on the Pentax don't seem quite as good. But the fisheye lens is so small and the L lenses feel like boulders around my neck. I'm trying to work with the fisheye. Here's an attempt.

I've been in the mood to sew lately

The fabric on the table is the linen I was sewing. I had enough material to make a matching dress and cape. When the outfit was finished, I ended up looking like an elf from Lord of the Rings. I was going to take a picture of me in the outfit but I wasn't feeling it.

Another guy asked me to photograph him nude

The first clue was an email from:

h4958@yahoo.com

Subject: Photography

I would like to have some nude photos taken of me for my girlfriend.

.....................................................................................

My thinking is usually work is work but the pose nude guys usually want the same thing: attention. We ended up talking on the phone. He realized I wasn't looking to play into his fantasy so that was the end of it.

I still don't understand the phenomenon. I wasn't even aware of it recently.

Well

I've been a little more proactive about putting posts on craigslist advertising photography services. I wrote on the ad that I charge $50 an hour.

Some guy responds on craigslist that anyone charging . . . oh, I'll go find the thing.

Here it is.
.....................................................................................
charging $50.00 for photographer service is a SCAM

Between buying the film and processing, that ALONE is $50.00 plus, that's not counting the time and talent and transportation of the photographer and whether they will use any further equipment. SMELLS LIKE A SCAM TO ME.

No one gives their work away for free - and if you decide to use someone's photo without their express permission, you are setting yourself up to be SUED for usage and ownership/copyright fees. Don't get caught out there, "models" and other "creative types".

I think that people who post here $50.00 for photography work are only lessening and damning the work that legitimate photographers do. And yes, there are decent photographers to be found on craigslist that don't do lousy photo work.

Beware, or you get what you pay for.
.....................................................................................

Okay, so I get it. I'm well aware that there's a major overhaul going on right now because of the switch over to digital. Photographers used to have to charge so much because their film expenses were so high. Someone like me has made a huge investment into digital equipment. It depreciates just sitting there. And it doesn't cost a whole lot to operate.

Digital photography is improving images just because you don't have to pay for film. You take a thousand shots and keep one. My father used to say that you're lucky if you get one good shot a roll. Now digital's looking as good as film too so there is definitely a revolution underway.

Today was really rough

Didn't get into the Hamptons Film Festival. I was prepared because . . . I volunteered there last year. Looked around for a friendly soul AND could not find one. There was a lot of talk about supporting Long Island filmmakers and first time directors. While I was there action told another story.

Sally Kellerman's SUV was getting rented. Her expensive hotel room was being booked. Sean Penn's whatever . . . Some very important films about genocide were up and coming.

You know when artsy types feel they have to support material that no one wants to watch because that's . . . just . . . so . . . courageous.

Ah the Hamptons, what can one expect.

Not a big deal but there were other problems. I'm moving over to RAW files on the camera. That led to losing some pictures. I'm testing and retesting to make sure nothing happens when I'm on an important job. Still losing nice images is disheartening.

Etc.

Jeremiah Pond

Originally uploaded by tanalee.
Most of us are exhausted from a crazy ass summer. The people come, steam roll over the place and then -- they don't leave. Traffic was standing still on the only highway that runs through this place. Man is this place HYPED.

Jeremiah works at Sag Harbor Beverage and I'm sure he's seen the worst of it. He's going to be in the movie and we're going to shoot at the beverage when things slow down a bit.

I had a great trade through craigslist today. I traded my casio 3.3 mp camera for a beautiful silver flute. Love it. Angel Roman was so nice about everything.

Snooty Tooty was there so I stayed only briefly to get some shots. Does that make sense? I'm saying the crowd was the kind that gets on my nerves.

Tonight I'm shooting at Jet East. Definitely braced for the worst. It'll be the last weekend for the nightclub jobs. Tomorrow I'm picking up a puppy dachshund!
